What is Creative fatigue?
Creative fatigue is the decline in an ad's performance caused by the same audience seeing it repeatedly, rather than by any change in the offer or the targeting.
Updated
Creative fatigue is the most common reason a working account slowly stops working, and it is frequently misdiagnosed as a targeting or structure problem. The tell is the combination: click-through rate falling while frequency rises and cost per click climbs, with nothing else changed.
The expensive mistake is responding by rebuilding. Tearing down campaigns resets the learning phase, discards accumulated signal, and buys the same answers a second time — all to solve a problem that lived in the ad, not the account. The cheaper response is a genuinely new creative angle into the existing structure.
What “genuinely new” means matters. A different hook, format or argument fatigues slowly; a recolour of the same idea fatigues immediately. The best insurance is knowing which of your ads survive repetition, because durability is a property you can select for. Some of our longest-running Meta ads accounts have held a single campaign live for eight months without a rebuild, and the reason is always the same: the creative was built to last rather than to spike in week one.
A worked example
An ad set runs the same video for six weeks. Frequency climbs from 1.4 to 4.2 while results move in one direction.
- Week 1: CTR 2.8%, CPC ₹4.10, frequency 1.4
- Week 6: CTR 1.1%, CPC ₹9.80, frequency 4.2
- Spend and audience unchanged throughout
Falling CTR with rising frequency and rising CPC is fatigue, not a targeting failure.
Common mistakes
- Rebuilding the campaign structure when only the creative is tired, which resets the learning phase for no reason.
- Treating every dip as fatigue. Check frequency first — if it has not moved, the cause is elsewhere.
- Refreshing with cosmetic edits. A new colour grade on the same idea fatigues again almost immediately.
