What is Performance Max?

Performance Max is Google's automated campaign type that serves a single set of assets across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail and Discover from one budget and one goal.

Updated

Performance Max asks for more trust than any other Google campaign type. One budget, one goal, and Google decides which network serves the ad. Handled carelessly it becomes a black box that quietly harvests demand you already had.

The single most important control is what you let it claim. If branded search sits inside Performance Max, the campaign will report excellent returns for capturing people who were already looking for you, and the number will be true and useless. Separating branded search into its own campaign is the first thing we do on any account running it.

The second control is the feed. Performance Max is only as good as the product data behind it: titles, images, availability and pricing do more for results than any setting in the interface. And the third is the target itself, which should be derived from contribution margin rather than accepted from the platform’s suggestion. Set the floor deliberately and Performance Max is a strong tool; accept its defaults and it will optimise for something that is not your profit.

A worked example

A brand runs ₹80,000 a month through Performance Max with a feed of 120 products and a target return set against its real break-even.

  1. Contribution margin is 40%, so break-even ROAS is 2.5x
  2. Target ROAS is set at 4.0x, comfortably above break-even
  3. Spend rises only while the account holds above that floor

The floor is set from margin, not from a number the platform suggests.

Common mistakes

  • Setting a target ROAS the platform suggests rather than one derived from your own contribution margin.
  • Letting Performance Max absorb branded search it did not create, which inflates its apparent return.
  • Running it with a thin or poorly structured product feed and blaming the campaign type for the result.
